Why would a foodie site write about what one would normally think a mundane breakfast sandwich of a cinnamon toasted raisin bagel with bacon egg and cheese, you ask? Well, this post was a long time coming, ever since the Foodie saw a disturbing online video of a Brooklyn NY guy going apeshit on a deli clerk for not making his requested sandwich fast enough, and then assaulting him. It’s not even the video or incident itself, but the online commenter reaction to the makeup of the sandwich, which many people seem to think is a gross combination. Let’s delve a bit…
Cinnamon Toasted Raisin Bagel with Bacon Egg and Cheese Horror
It all started in November 2018, when an alleged drunk and rowdy Ediberto Burgos, or is it Edilburto Burgos, ventured into the Hi Mango Natural Market on Flushing Ave. in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York City. He wanted a cinnamon toasted raisin bagel with bacon egg and cheese, and he wanted it “right now”. Dammit.
You will notice that the title of this article intentionally uses “Cinnamon TOASTED Raisin bagel..” rather than the more logical and common, “Toasted Cinnamon Raisin bagel”, due to the perpetrator’s use of that phraseology word arrangement. Please note this.
The deli guy tried to tell him that it would be a few minutes since there were orders ahead of him, but Mr. Burgos threw what looks like a temper tantrum, totally freaking out on the guy and then throwing stuff at him. It was a sight to behold.
Check out a news video on the incident here:
There is an actual news article on his eventual arrest that I will also link to.
You may have seen this as it went viral on Facebook and YouTube around the time of the incident. So, the above is to refresh the memory.
Cinnamon Toasted Raisin Bagel with Bacon Egg and Cheese – The Combination
What caught the Foodie’s attention more than the incident, was the combination of using a cinnamon raisin bagel as the basis for this sandwich.
Most of the online commenters, whether on YouTube or Facebook or elsewhere, seemed fixated on the cinnamon raisin bagel and thought that using that flavor bagel was an unforgivable faux pas.
I can’t say that this is all out of line because even someone as adventurous as your Foodie sometimes gets caught up in the regimentation of traditional combinations.
Most times, when ordering a sandwich like this, one opts for a plain bagel, or poppy, sesame, whole wheat, egg… anything but something sweetish like cinnamon raisin!
Discounting people who don’t like raisins or cinnamon under ANY circumstances, many people who DO like the cinnamon raisin bagel, like your not so humble Foodie, looked at this video and were immediately horrified at that particular combination. After all, who would use a sweet like creation to house a fatty salty type content such as bacon egg and cheese?
I was going with this for months, eventually forgetting all about it, until it somehow reentered my consciousness, and I also came across a thread on the social network, Reddit, proclaiming that this actually WAS not only a forgivable foodie offense, but a very delicious combination.
So, the Foodie decided to try it for himself and settle it once and for all, and report on it first hand.
Cinnamon Toasted Raisin Bagel with Bacon Egg and Cheese – The Experience
This was on a Monday, and weekday breakfast is usually skipped, by the way, and lunch as well, due to utilizing intermittent fasting to control one’s weight. After all, as a foodie one HAS TO put some brakes on the food consumption at some point.
I went to the local bagel shop and asked about it.
The lady at the counter took my order and I was speaking to her about it, referencing the aforementioned Brooklyn Bagel Incident, which she had heard about online. She was very up front in saying that yes, this WAS a good combination, and that many people also order variations, like a cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese and bacon sandwich, which is now something else that the Foodie must try in the future.
So, without any more fanfare, the sandwich was delivered and the Foodie took it, and a large coffee, home for the experience.
It actually LOOKED appetizing, but that could have been the effect of having breakfast, which is a treat while usually doing intermittent fasting, because, for me, dinner is usually my first meal of the day on weekdays.
So a few more food porn pictures of this sandwich from various angles.
The Foodie can report that it IS a delicious combination!
The subtle sweetness of the cinnamon raisin bagel coupled with the salty fatty goodness of the bacon egg and cheese is a most worthy taste sensation.
Maybe this guy is a foodie genius or something? Perhaps it was so good to him that he couldn’t contain himself. Whatever the reason for the outburst, my guess is that this delicacy is NOT served behind bars, so if I were him and really in love with this combination, I would keep my nose clean from now on. But, as they say in the movies, “Some men you just can’t reach…”
Hope this sets things straight and encourages more people to try this out and be more adventurous and to not judge culinary books by their covers.
Foodie, out.
Peace.
